Too many people have such a difficult time trying to wrap their heads around the idea of “skinny people” having body-image issues. It completely boggles my mind because can you really not understand that thin-shaming and fat-shaming are the same thing? The only difference is the substitution of the word “fat” for “too skinny.” They both have a negative connotation and they both have the power to make someone despise their body when they’ve been on the receiving end of these words their whole lives. Let me list the similarities for you:

Both imply that there is something wrong with your body that you can easily fix, which isn’t often true.
Both are fueled by hate and/or plain old ignorance
Both are hurtful and can be extremely detrimental to a person’s body-image

Let me just stop right there: BOTH ARE HURTFUL.

Now, do you want to know the differences? One of the main differences is that people have this assumption that you can’t have body-image issues because you’re thin and therefore must love your body. Yet, these are the same assholes who have been telling you your entire life that you’re too thin and should eat a goddamn sandwich. The fact alone that they don’t understand is frustrating enough for people like myself.

Another difference is that the people you open up to about these issues also have the misconception that because you’re thin you have no right to hate your body. And then you have these people bombarding you with phrases like, “Do you know how many people would kill for a body like yours?” and “I don’t understand why you dislike your body—you’re thin!” First of all, I don’t care how many people would be happy with a body like mine, because I’m not. And how I feel about my own body is all that really matters. Telling me that someone else would love to be in my shoes doesn’t change the fact that I’m not happy with my body. Second, THIN DOES NOT EQUAL HAPPY. I cannot stress this enough. There is no direct correlation between being thin and being happy with your body.
